Teulada: a corner of history on the Costa Blanca.
Teulada, the main town of Teulada-Moraira is slightly more sheltered from the crowded tourist bustle than Moraira. This village is a perfect example of how Mediterranean tradition, ancient history and the serenity of the rural environment can coexist with modernity and respectful tourist development.
The origins of Teulada go back to ancient times. Although the present town officially came into being in the 13th century after the Christian conquest, there are traces of Iberian and Roman settlements in the surrounding area. In fact, the territory occupied by Teulada today was part of the intense agricultural and commercial activity of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in the coastal area of Moraira.
During the Middle Ages, Teulada was repopulated by Christians from Catalonia and Aragon, which deeply marked its cultural and linguistic identity. The urban architecture of its old quarter still preserves traces of its medieval past: narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron details, and the imposing church-fortress of Santa Catalina, built in the 16th century as a place of worship and refuge from the attacks of Barbary corsairs.
Located just a few kilometres from the sea, but surrounded by hills covered with vineyards, pine and almond trees, Teulada offers a unique balance between countryside and coastline. The proximity of the Mediterranean provides a mild climate, with mild winters and warm summers, which has long favoured the cultivation of products such as the muscatel grape, the basis of the traditional sweet wine that bears the town's name.
The landscapes surrounding Teulada are an invitation to contemplation and a quiet stroll. Both hikers and photography enthusiasts find in its rural paths and in the views from the Cap d'Or - in neighbouring Moraira - a constant source of amazement and delight. The fusion between the intense blue of the sea, the ochre tones of the earth and the green of the crops create a typically Mediterranean landscape, full of harmony and beauty.
Teulada is also a bastion of Valencian culture. Although Spanish is widely spoken, Valencian - a variety of Catalan typical of the Valencian Community - is still very present in everyday life, at school, in the local administration and, of course, in popular celebrations.
The patron saint festivities, dedicated to San Vicente Ferrer, are one of the most vivid manifestations of local identity. For several days, the town is transformed: there is entertainment music in the streets, bull running, traditional parades, solemn masses and popular meals.
Crafts, traditional music and gastronomy also play a leading role. Dishes such as paella or ‘putxero’ coexist with typical sweets such as ‘pastissets’ or ‘cocas’, and with wines made in the traditional way, which conserve the essence of past generations.
In recent decades, Teulada has been able to open up to tourism without losing its character. The expansion of the coastal town of Moraira, which forms part of its municipal area, has brought with it foreign visitors and residents, mostly European, who have found this corner of the Mediterranean to be an ideal place to rest or live all year round.
However, unlike other enclaves that have seen their essence disappear in the face of the advance of mass tourism, Teulada has managed to maintain its roots. The commitment to a model of sustainable development, respectful of the environment and the local culture, can be seen both in the architecture and in the social life of the town.
In short Teulada is not just a destination, but an experience. It is a place where time seems to pass in a different way, with a more human and calm rhythm. Its rich heritage, its captivating landscape and the warmth of its people make this town a little-known treasure that deserves to be discovered with all five senses.
Whether strolling through its historic quarter, enjoying a sunset in Moraira or savouring a Muscatel wine under a hundred-year-old vine, Teulada invites the visitor to stop, to observe and, above all, to feel. In an increasingly fast-paced world, places like this remind us of the value of the authentic and the simple.
